Alice in Wonderland

Whew...this took me forever to do...So this is my 3rd assignment for my illustration class. We had to redesign an already published book's cover.

I spent much of last week both reading and sketching out ideas for this other book I wanted to do the cover for. However, after reading I was left rather uninspired...so I decided to do a cover for Alice in Wonderland. My first draft consisted of this horrible drawing of the caterpillar on his mushroom with Alice looking at him. Everything was bright and colourful and I was having a horrible time with it because I suck when it comes to using a large pallet....

I took the sketch of that picture to class for critiques and people commented that it didn't look like I was having fun with it. Which was weird to hear cause I though I was having fun with it...at least I was compared to the last picture I had been doing...They also commented that it didn't have to be a bright and cheerful childrens book.

So taking all that in consideration I suddenly came to the conclusion that I should draw the hatter. Unfortunately his closed pose made it more difficult to show off a really cool outfit design I really enjoy this picture. I'm glad everyone hated the other one. Next Wed I'm going to show this to my teacher and ask if I should fix anything. If I do I shall update this picture.
